For a variety of reasons the web is moving towards encryption. As a result, we now include an easy way to encrypt (SSL) your Metro Publisher website – no hassle and no additional cost.
Why should I do it?
While Google made its position clear some time ago, it is only really recently that the issue is evident to your readers. All major browsers now provide a warning to users when a website is not encrypted. While most people have no idea how encryption works, they certainly will react if they receive a warning saying a website they are about to visit is "not secure." So, it is time for publishers to encrypt.
How is it done?
Until recently setting up SSL for your website was a complicated process which involved purchasing an SSL certificate. But in Metro Publisher, it is now a very easy matter of going in to your Site Settings and selecting to have HTTPS turned on. That's it.
Options
While we suggest all clients fully encrypt their websites, we offer three options:
- HTTPS Only – This is the default for new users and the optimal setting.
- HTTP and HTTPS – This is useful as an intermediate step towards full HTTPS for sites that have been running for a while and don't want to risk having broken links to pages featuring content (ie. video, audio, from a 3rd party) from a site without encryption.
- HTTP Only – This option is really ONLY for clients whose websites don't work properly under HTTPS, the most common cause of this is if they have external resources (e.g. javascript) referenced via HTTP urls. All old clients have this automatically to prevent breakage.
